Movies!

By Keiti | July 7, 2007

Last night, L. o’Balls and I went to see 1408 - a movie based on a short story by Stephen King. I’d managed to find the book with the short story in it a couple of days ago, and I was interested to see how they fleshed the movie out.

Generally, Stephen King books make horrible movies - with the exception of a few, including The Shining, The Stand, and Misery, I can’t say that the adaptations have been very good. And while 1408 wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, the writers did a great job in filling in the gaps. I wasn’t sure whether to expect something horror driven - wasn’t sure if I wanted it to be horror driven - it would have been far too easy to make it a simple slash and dash, but I was thrilled to find out that they’d gone the psychological thriller route - with everything that’s gone on in my life over the past 5 days, I wanted something that would help me come to terms with it, or, at the very least, give me a bit of perspective (and, yes, I know this line of thinking sort of defeats the escapism of movies….) It helped - it didn’t fix things, but it gave me some things to think about.

Besides, escapism will come next week when I go see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I picked up my ticket last night - Thursday at 12:10 pm.

Bring it on!

Anyway, back to 1408 - there were some moments of pure cheese - a dream resolution that pissed me off until they rectified it shortly thereafter. I hate dream resolutions - they freakin’ suck and are a cop out when writers can’t think of anything else to explain things. John Cusack is a dream in this role - probably because, at least for me, it was the last type of role I’d ever expect to see him in.

It’s worth a look-see. And it’ll probably be a movie I pick up on DVD when it’s released.
