God = God = God

By The Misfit | August 24, 2007

I grew up as what I refer to as “Army Protestant” which, in layman’s terms, which means church services geared toward all forms of Protestantism (I hope that’s a word – if not, it is now). Sort of a non-denominational set-up, as it were. I was dragged to church until I was 17, when I put my foot down and refused to go. I spent most of my 20′s exhibiting decidedly non-Christian behavior. I still do, if truth be told, but as I’ve grown older I’ve started making my own determinations as to what God means to me.

As of right now, I am officially Episcopalian. I chose the Episcopal church because it was the first (and only, I might add) church where no one looked at me funny. I guess that’s an odd reason to choose a denomination, but when one looks as freakish as I used to, well, you take acceptance where you can find it.

I started going back to church when I was up in Georgia and met some great people. I sort of scrapped going while I was dating S. because the weekends were the only time we had to spend together and with him not being a church-goer…well, that got lost by the wayside.

I’m not sure I even believe in going to church.  I just don’t feel it.  And as far as God goes, I’m of the mind set that there is only one God – just different paths to reach him. The God of the Bible is the God of the Jews and the God of the Muslims. My father and I have agreed to disagree on this point. It’s not that I want to pick and choose something from each religion that seems right to me, but since both Christianity and Islam are essentially offshoots of Judaism (something my father and I disagree on) I don’t see how it can be any different.
