Decisions, Decisions

By Keiti | October 10, 2007

Lately I’ve been thinking about a new laptop - My Sony Vaio is three years old and starting to do some funky stuff.  Not enough for it to be a problem yet, but since all my writing and stuff is on here (with virtually no back up - to quote Ned from Pushing Daisies, “That’s just how I roll.”  or something like that.)

Anyway, I’ve been toying around with the idea of switching to an iMac.  For a number of reasons - for one, I’m tired of dealing with all the virus issues - it’s my understanding (perhaps incorrectly) that there aren’t as many viruses floating around that affect Macs.  The other reason is because I really like the idea of being able to edit movies & stuff with iMovies.  I used it while I was in college and loved it.  I’m not sure why I’m feeling drawn towards editing my own movies, except to say I’m drawn to writing film scripts, so…  I’m also sick of the world of Bill Gates.  There are always so many issues to contend with and security holes to patch and viruses to clean up.  I’ve had more virus problems in the last year.  Thankfully, none of them have caused any problems (that I’ve been able to determine, anyway).

But now I’m having second thoughts - mostly because I’m not convinced I can justify spending $1500 or more on a laptop - because I don’t have it.  Which is kind of funny considering the small fortune I spent on my Vaio (about $2300).  That’s why I’m kind of glad it’s lasted as long as it has.  And for the most part I’ve been happy with it.  The two things that drive me insane are the weight (it’s pretty heavy) and the fact that the fan runs incredibly loud.  Over all, though, I think I’ve decided to stay with a PC.  I don’t think I want another Vaio, and have been contemplating getting a Dell.  My brother is the resident computer expert, so I think I’m going to ask him about looking into it for me - I know nothing about computers - the only thing I really care about is that it runs when I turn it on, and that I can do what I need to do with it.

It’ll be after the first of the year before I can even think about getting a new computer - I should just back this one up and run it until it burns out.  That would probably be the smart thing to do.

But I do like new toys.
