Okay - so I know that’s note really how the saying goes, but “Stupid is as Stupid Does” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
I’m sure all of us at some point have heard of Westboro Baptist Church and the idiotic Fred Phelps who, along with his congregation, have taken to picketing funerals of fallen service members under the ideology that soldiers die because the U.S. tolerates homosexuality. Normally, I would include a link for both sides, but I simply refuse to promote WBC’s website - there’s a big difference between having a belief that homosexuality is immoral and having a belief that homosexuality is immoral and disrupting grieving families.
I read this article on Foxnews.com about how Albert Snyder, father of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder who was killed in Iraq, is suing Westboro Baptist Church for picketing his son’s funeral. Now, regardless of how you feel about the war in Iraq, there is absolutely no reason why a funeral, any funeral, should be picketed. A funeral is a time to grieve and pay respect to a loved one and no one should have the right to disrupt that process.
Mr. Snyder has a webpage up where you can donate to help offset court costs. I urge all of you to donate - I will be as soon as my next paycheck comes through on Wednesday. Someone needs to hold Westboro Baptist Church accountable - it may as well be us.
And this will be filed under both MHoF on account of Mr. Snyder standing up for what’s right and MHoS for Westboro Baptist Church not having the decency to let people grieve in peace.
