Holiday Treats and Then Some…
By Keiti | November 19, 2007
I wish I could say I was looking forward to the holidays this year. As I’m sure you can very well imagine, based on my frequent bemoaning the state of my brain, I’m just not feeling it much this year. Thanksgiving will be a wash because I’ll be sleeping the entire day and will work Thursday night as usual. My parents will be going up to see my brother and sister-in-law to spend the day with them. I’m sorry to miss the festivities since I don’t get to see them that often, even though they only live an hour and a half away, but at the same time all I can think about is the time I get to sleep.
Christmas will hopefully be better since this gig should be well over. I still have all my shopping to do - I have in mind what I want to do for presents this year, but haven’t had the time nor the inclination to get started. Since work could conceivably run until mid-December, it may be a last-minute rush to get everything done.
And speaking of Christmas, I don’t know if it’s the constant lack of sleep, but I’m feeling a bit grinchy. One of the things that drives me absolutely crazy are the diamond commercials. I don’t like diamonds. Never have. Don’t even want a diamond engagement ring if and when I ever reach the point of actually getting married. Somehow this topic came up with a male co-worker a couple of days ago. I told him the above point and he asked me what I’d want instead; I told him probably either a black onyx or a ruby. He was absolutely appalled; even more so when I told him I had no plans of wearing a white wedding dress - that it would either be black or red.
You’d have thought I’d grown horns.
I’ve thought a lot about this over the years, and I stand firm in my convictions. It may be selfish, but a wedding day is special and I’d want it to be a day that is indicative of who I am and who my prospective husband is. Trust me - anyone I seriously think about marrying isn’t going to have a problem with it.
That’s just how I roll.

Well I hope you get the rest you need! And I agree–your wedding should be representative of who you are. Play the songs you want, wear what you want, blah blah blah. That’s what makes it that much more special and beautiful.

re: christmas shopping…
one word: INTERNET!

I did it that way last year and it was brilliant- most places do free gift wrapping and they’ll ship it right to your or the recipient’s door. I’m very, very, very, very bad at going to the post office, even to mail back our Netflix, so eShopping was a lifesaver.
http://www.etsy.com has lots of cool and hip crafty kinds of things for the amigos and I even found a really beautiful handpainted vase from a chick in B.C. for the mom-in-law last year. It was so cool, it was hard to give it to her. haha
re: diamonds
I’m so with you on this one…. the diamond commercials SUCK. I was listening to the radio the other day (which I never do) and every five minutes another one would come on! After an hour, I finally turned it off. Tim said it’s like that all day long (the radio plays all day at the printing press where he works). We don’t have cable, thank the gods, or I might have to kill someone- I’ve heard the tv ones are even worse and just as persistent.
re: weddings
yes, dammit, it’s YOUR day! I’d probably go back and wear jeans and a comfy sweater if I could do it all over again.
re: rings again- one of my co-workers eloped last weekend and she got a beautiful band made out of tungsten!! It is SO very, very cool- I told tim on the 10 year mark fast approaching, we’re just gonna hafta trade out and get new rings- I want tungsten too!! ;D haha
