The Christmas Spirit ala The Misplaced Misfit Children

By Keiti | December 17, 2007

The Misfit Family has finally gotten into the Christmas Spirit and put up the tree. We ran a little bit late this year, but better late than never. As long as I’ve been alive (that would be 36 years for those of you counting) we’ve always had a real tree. I seem to recall my dad suggesting a fake tree some years ago, but I rebelled. He’ll probably deny having suggested it, so we’ll move on.

Growing up in a military family generally means you don’t have a lot of money. Frankly, what the government pays military people is appalling, but that’s another rant entirely. Anyway, my mom had a lot of tricks to stretch the monthly funds - she used to make homemade play-doh for my brother and me. Which has nothing to do with Christmas, really. It’s just an example of my mom’s utter brilliance. One of the other things we did was make homemade Christmas ornaments, most of which, I’m sure, have been lost along the wayside since we moved around so much. My absolute favorite ornament is one my brother painted. I have no idea how old he was, but here’s a picture of it in all its insane glory:

Notice the black, not-so-beady eyes Santa has. And he apparently has jaundice given the yellow state of his skin. Oh, and he’s carrying a baseball bat. No wonder I thought my brother was going to terrorize me. Oh, wait a minute… he did terrorize me. You know - sibling rivalry and all that. ;-) Actually, I’m surprised this one hasn’t gotten broken over the years since it’s ceramic.

The other ornament of note this year isn’t really an ornament. It’s a partial ornament. Take a look at the picture before you proceed:

That’s right, folks. We have a bald, decapitated doll head on our Christmas tree this year. That’s the Christmas mouse sitting behind it (whose name my mom keeps telling me and whose name I always forget…) My mom’s going to kill me for posting this, I’m sure, but it’s hilarious. Okay…I find it hilarious, mostly because it’s completely and utterly screwed up. I like a little bit of dark humor regardless of the holiday. I also have no idea where the head came from nor what it was originally attached to.

I guess I’ll have to dig deeper in the ornament boxes for a headless doll body.

We’re also getting in to the swing of things in the UK… here’s a clip of an experiment I’ve taken part in to get people to have fun at Christmas.

Ah, our family Christmas ornaments. Since it has been a while since I have actually been down there for a visit(They come up here, with all the grandkids(7) and spouses and great grand kids(again 7 almost 8) we have more room here than there). Do Mom and Dad still have those painted wooden ornaments that we made as kids? I always liked those. Also you should have posted a picture of the Christmas pickle!
(begin rant)But yes, what they pay soldiers is a travesty, they have gotten better but when a do nothing congressman makes $200k for job that the founders thought should be a part time gig, it is sad, that the people that do the hardest jobs in our Republic get paid beans and have to live in what is alot of times substandard housing.(end rant)

P.S. It’s Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukkah, not Happy Holidays (Ramadan was earlier this year)

Thanks, DC. A reply is now in your inbox.

    Open Wide, perv. ;-)
I just asked my mom if I used to eat the homemade play-doh, too. She said I tried, but I didn’t like it because it was too salty.

    CII,

Yes, the painted wooden ornaments are still hanging on the tree. The Christmas Pickle is cool, but not nearly as much fun as the Insane Santa or the decapitated doll’s head. Even you have to admit that.

I’m not going to get into a rant about how little soldiers are paid. Not here. Besides, you’d know better than me.

Who said anything about Happy Holidays? I’m going to do a post on that, maybe today. Have a massage scheduled for 9:30. I so can’t wait. I got so tense when I was working the insane hours and living with some serious lack of sleep - I’ve actually been grinding my teeth.

    KJP no like.

    Love you, bro!

I LOVE the head! How hilarious that you keep hanging it up!

    ohamanda,

This is actually the first year I’ve hung the doll head. I don’t remember seeing it hanging around before now.

(I just can’t seem to get away from the really bad puns today…)

But it does make me giggle like a little school girl every time I walk by the tree.
    :-)
