Buying Indulgences
By The Misfit | January 28, 2008
You know – I don’t understand this whole Carbon offset movement. Aside from the fact that I’m not convinced that global warming is anything more than hysterics (which is not to say I don’t think we need to take better care of our planet), this whole buying carbon offsets to make up for polluting the environment thing (instead of simply finding a way to decrease pollution), is yet another way for businesses to buy their way out of guilt. It allows them to feel as if they’re doing something when they’re not really doing anything to combat the problem in the first place.
Wouldn’t it make more sense for the companies to combat their own pollution instead of continuing to make more and simply buying themselves into good graces?
I’m open for someone to explain to me exactly why this is a good idea.

Do a google search of “paying of indulgences”. A brief history lesson. Indulgences were a way of Catholics in the pre-reformation times to pay off their sins. It was one of the things that Martin Luther railed about in his thesis. I see buying carbon offsets as the same thing.
If you want to help with reducing the amount of energy we use in the United States, do something personal. Don’t run the AC all the time, when you build a house, build it using the most energy efficent methods. Include cogeneration as part of the building plan, ie photo voltaics. That works.

You mean I can’t pay off my sins and get into heaven? Damn that Martin Luther! Well with that said I’m heading out the door with my life savings in hand and I’m gonna buy me a SUV.
