My Newest Toys

By Keiti | May 11, 2008

In preparation for my trip to Scotland and grad school, I’ve invested in a new laptop.  And I finally made the decision to switch from a PC to a mac.

It only arrived on Friday, and I’m still figuring out how things work and learning how to operate the damn thing and even though I haven’t done much more than the cursory looksee, I’m already in love.

Even though I’m sick of Microsoft stuff (which was part of the reason I decided to switch to a mac) I’m happy that they finally offer Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for mac, all of which will come in handy for school, not to mention the writing I have that was done in Word and would have been a huge hassle to switch over to another program.

I did, however, run into a bit of an annoyance; apparently macros can’t be created in Word 2008 for mac.  Which normally wouldn’t be a big deal except that I do all of my script formatting in Word and that requires recording macros.  I can hardly afford Final Draft (which runs about $300) which is the creme de jour of scriptwriting programs; up-til-now I’d refused to give in and shell out that kind of money but I nearly gave in yesterday - since most of the writing I do is in the form of scripts it doesn’t do me any good if I don’t have a way to format them properly.

But, as luck would have it, I manage to solve the issue without having to spend the $300.  At some point, I remember hearing about freeware scriptwriting software.  A cursory google search netted me just the information I needed and I found a program called Celtx.

I’ve only just started working with it, but it’s a dream and is actually far less hassle than setting up the formatting in Word.

I’m just beginning my adventures in macland, but I can already tell it’s going to be extraordinary.

Glad you’re happy with your new toys, but I was almost expecting something about mother’s day, being away from your fam, that kind of stuff…glad you’re able to stay focused on the important stuff, like scripting software! lol

I don’t have to post on my blog that I wished the most important person a Happy Mother’s Day.
