Enter Sandman…Or Not

By The Misfit | March 6, 2009

I’m a night owl – always have been.  Getting up at the crack of dawn be it for work or classes happens, but it’s not something that makes me particularly happy.  Generally, about two hours after I get up I’m ready to go crawl back in bed.  Seriously.

So, last night I went to see The Dark Knight.  Again.  For the third time.  Love it.  Love it.  The scene where the Joker walks out of the hospital all dolled up in the nurses uniform is absolutely exquisite.  In that I’m a maniacal thrill killer sort of way.

Anyway, the movie let out between 10:30 and 11:00 – I had intended to saunter home listening to my iPod and enjoy my current lack of insanity.  Only I got waylaid by pirates friends who forced conned me into going to listen to live music and hanging out for a bit.

Didn’t pay much attention to the live music – I was more intent on arguing with W.B. about Metallica (I say you’ve heard one Metallica song, you’ve heard them all…W.B. vehemently disagrees) and giggling at his impression of James Hetfield singing Tom Jones songs.  12:45 rolls around and I disappear for the evening, yawning and knowing that it was way past my usual bedtime.  (I may not like getting up early, but I do have to keep myself on some sort of schedule since I have to exist on school time rather than misfit time.)  I get back to the residence around 1am, check my email (it’s a necessity to check my email at 1:00 in the morning because, let me tell you, people are breaking down my door sending me emails…was it something I said?)  I finally fell asleep somewhere near 2am thinking it would be great – I’ll have a bit of a lie in, maybe I’ll scrap going into Stirling until the afternoon or put it off until Saturday.  I’ve got a standing lunch date at 12:00, coffee with interesting people at 1:00 ish.  Won’t be nearly enough time to head to the city for errands and I figure I’ll decide after I get up when I’m going to go.

Until I woke up at the freakin’ crack of dawn 7:45am, absolutely wide awake, well aware that I wasn’t going to be coherent about much of anything.  I knew trying to go back to sleep would be an impossibility, so I got up, ran my errands, and got back in just enough time to put groceries away before heading for lunch.  After lunch went straight to coffee and hung out for another hour or so, by which time I was on the 5-second delay (which is when someone says something and it takes a minimum of 5 seconds for it to register in my brain) so I shuffled back to the residence fully intent on taking an afternoon snooze.

I lie down, settle in for the long haul (it wasn’t going to be a 30 minute cat nap, I was sure) and the minute I did, what do you think happened?

Wide awake, that’s what freakin’ happened.  I swear, me and the sandman are going to have a long chat sometime soon.  And it’s not going to be pretty.
