My Future Husband Is Awesome!
By The Misfit | September 30, 2009
When I was little I didn’t give much thought to guys. Seriously. Er… at least that I can remember. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) As I got older, however, I began to make a mental checklist of what I wanted (okay… older constitutes about 30… shut up! I was a late bloomer…). I wanted someone who was nice and normal (after dating drug addicts, alcoholics, and all-around jerks), only to discover that nice and normal didn’t equate to not being an all-around jerk, so at 38 I find myself still single.
Mostly I don’t mind. Seriously. I mean, I can do what I want, when I want, and not have to answer to anyone or compromise or put up with any ridiculous behavior. So, now I’ve decided that I want to get down and dirty.
Which is why I’ve decided to stalk marry Mike Rowe. You know, from Dirty Jobs? Last I heard he had a long-term girlfriend, but I’m not letting that stop me. Mike, are you listening?
Anyway, I caught a quick interview with him yesterday morning on one of the news channels. He was talking about how there is a shortage of skilled workers in the United States – frankly, if I hadn’t let my dad talk me into college and grad school, I’d be one of those skilled laborers. Book learning is fun and all, and I love that, too, obviously, but there’s something in doing physical labor that feeds my soul. I’ve never been afraid to get my hands dirty. Payin’ attention, Mike?
As it turns out, Mike Rowe has created a website that aims to not only draw attention to the shortage of skilled labor, but to also create an outlet for people interested in pursuing a skilled labor career. Somehow it’s become the norm to push college as the only way to effectively support one’s self financially, and let me tell you, it’s becoming more and more difficult to enter the workforce after college. This was apparent to me well before the economy tanked, and now it’s gotten far worse. Of course, for me this may be due to the fact that I’d rather gouge my eye out with a spoon than work for a big corporation and be stuck in some stuffy office – but I don’t think anyone can deny that the market is flooded with too many people with college and postgrad degrees. Mostly because we, as a culture, have looked down on tradesmen and women for far too long.
(I’m not saying I regret any of my schooling – the reasons why are too numerous to get into at the moment, but this isn’t going to turn into a therapy session…)
So, go check out Mike’s site. It’s called MikeRoweWorks.
And I’ll let you know when we set the date. ;-)
