The Wrath of Fay…

By Keiti | August 18, 2008

This is the view from my house of the outer bands of what is now Tropical Storm Fay starting to come through.

I don’t think we’ll get too much damage from this storm since we’re on the east coast and the storm’s coming in from the west, but I have no doubt that we’re in for a lot of rain over the next couple of days.

Hot Off The Press

By Keiti | August 13, 2008

In yet another bid to procrastinate, I came across this.

I’m such a dork, but I think it would be awesome if it were true.

If nothing else, the press conference should be fun to watch.

Is There No Shame?

By Keiti | August 13, 2008

It seems everyone has a story about seeing The Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Mine isn’t as nearly as exciting as most; the first time I saw it was on video - a bootleg copy with Japanese subtitles long before it was released for home viewing.  The first time I saw it live was at the Carefree Theatre in West Palm Beach.  I honestly don’t remember much about that night except that I got pissed at my brother and Slaveboy for screaming at the hookers along Tamarind Avenue on the drive home (not exactly the best part of town).  That and the tape player in my car at J.E.’s copy of Depeche Mode’s Black Celebration on the drive down.

I’m hardly the biggest fan of Rocky Horror - I haven’t seen it in years and would be hard pressed to go see it in a theatre these days; I don’t even know if there are any theatres down this way that still play it - but I love the movie - it’s pure camp and the traditions that go along with it allow for a childlike joy that remains unparelled.

And Tim Curry.  *sigh*

But I digress.

In my wanderings online yesterday (read: time wasting when I should have been doing more to get ready to go) I read on WWdN that MTV is planning on doing a remake.

*insert sound of needle screeching across an LP*

Are they insane?  Haven’t there been enough crappy remakes already?  My last big irritation was the remake of 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds which was, coincidentally, partially filmed at my alma mater and apparently shelved for whatever reason as the new version isn’t listed on IMDB.

I say thank God for small favors.  I’m hoping for one this time, too.

Please go sign the petition.  Even if you’re not a Rocky Horror fan.  We don’t need any more remakes to begin with and there are plenty of good scripts available by writers who would love to have their movies made.  Not to mention, MTV has sucked for very many years now.

Boycotting the 2008 Olympics…Or Not

By Keiti | August 9, 2008

There was a definite line drawn in the sand in the Misfit household last night - those of us who watched the 2008 Olympic Opening Ceremonies and those of us who were boycotting.

Just for the record, I watched.  As did my mom.

My dad did his own thing.

And I respect that, just as I respect those who made the decision to boycott.

I don’t agree with it, but I respect it.

Those who chose not to watch it, however, missed a spectacular show, probably the most opulent and breathtaking Olympic Opening Ceremony in the history of Olympic Ceremonies.

Seriously.

I was blown away.  The amount of work that so obviously went into the preparations is astounding.  15,000 unique performers, each keeping in perfect time with the rest of the group that was performing.  I mean, precision timing.  The costumes were intricate and perfectedly beautiful.  This was the people of China’s opportunity to shine, and shine they did.

Notice I said “people of China” not “government of China”.

The 2008 Olympiad isn’t about the government of China, whose policies I vehemently disagree with, but about the people of China who hardly have a say in what the Chinese Government says or does.  It’s also about the athletes, from China and beyond, many of whom who have spent years preparing for this moment.  The moment to show the entire world what they’re capable of - their athleticism that most of us can only dream of attaining.  It’s their time to stand out and be rewarded for all of their hard work.

Those who chose to boycott based on China’s Government’s policies miss the point completely; the Olympics are a time to set aside differences, leave the most blatant politics at the door, and celebrate life in exuberant hopes and dreams; to realize that beneath any government’s policies people are far more alike than they are different.  Looking beyond the trappings of culture we all want to be acknowledged for our strengths and sweat equity, the ability to be the best at what we do and, I dare say, who we are as individuals within the whole.

We have plenty of time to get back to boycotting - for now I’m content to sit in awe of people who have accomplished what most of us could only wish for and root them on in their respective quests for greatness.

All Scotland, All The Time

By Keiti | August 7, 2008

I’ve finally managed to get myself to realize that I’m leaving for Scotland in about 3 weeks and 8 days.

Which means the to-do lists I create when I get up are actually getting done.

I still have plenty to do, but most of the big stuff is done, thankfully.  I still need to decide whether I’m staying in London the night I arrive or if I’m going to scoot on up to Stirling.  It’ll depend on how late I can arrive and still move into temporary campus housing.  I’m waiting for an email back from the university about that one.

And I’d never thought I’d say this, but I need to figure out what I’m going to do about shoes - I suppose most girls would have this issue, but most of my shoes are actually boots which means that not only are they heavy, but they take up more space.  I’ve got to spend some time on that today.  Of course, I don’t need to take all of my boots, but there are certain pairs I need to take with me, either physically or have them shipped.  I’m only taking on small suitcase with me because I want to be able to take it as a carry on rather than check it - I’m worried that if I check it it’ll be misplaced and that would be disastrous.

So the final minute details need to be solved.

I kinda suck at minute details.

Does anyone else have that problem, or is it just me?

More on China’s Three Gorges Dam

By Keiti | August 2, 2008

It’s been a busy week, and not looking to get any less chaotic, but Adair Simon, creator of China’s Three Gorges Dam: A Flood of Controversy, had a brief interview run on WABE in Atlanta the other day about the documentary. It took me awhile to locate it online, but here it is.

China’s Three Gorges Dam

By Keiti | July 30, 2008

I just found out that a documentary that I worked on doing research is going to be airing on WPBA in Atlanta (I believe it’s the Atlanta affiliate of PBS) on Thursday, 31 July.

You can check out the website at China’s Three Gorges Dam and learn a bit about the film as well as the filmaker, Adair Simon, and the additional people involved.

So, what are you waiting for?  Go check it out!

Monday Morning Misfit

By Keiti | July 28, 2008

I’m having a hard time getting started this morning.  I was up until 2am reading - woke up at 7, continued dozing until 9 or so, got up and have accomplished absolutely nothing.  Nada.  Zilch.

The yard sale went fine - not as lucrative as I’d have liked, but I got rid of some stuff.  My neighbor, J., across the street came over and hung out for a bit which was cool.  B.A. brought me iced coffee from you know where and kept me company for a little bit.  It’s the first time I’ve seen him since I got back.  It was so unbearably hot on Saturday that I decided to skip the yard sale on Sunday and have chosen to donate everything that’s left.  Books will go to the library, clothes and other knick-knacks will go to my parents’ church - they run a soup kitchen on Wednesdays and one of the ladies, Mrs. B. R., runs a clothing boutique that people who come to eat can choose clothes from for free, and they also have a thrift store that will get everything else.  The few pieces of furniture will go to whichever thrift store in town will come pick them up (if none of them will, I’ll put them down by the curb with a “free” sign and let someone pick them up).  I’ve just got to get everything separated and ready to go.

I am also now officially without a car - my brother came down for the weekend and took my car back up with him.  I’ll sign the title over to him today once my dad gets it from the safety deposit box.  It’s going to be weird not having a car, but I’m also glad to be rid of it.  It’s a great car, hardly pretty, but definitely dependable.  Thankfully, I can use one of my parents’ cars when I need to so I think I’ll survive the next 5 weeks without my own car.

5 weeks.

It still doesn’t seem like enough time to get everything done.

Oh, The Fluidity…

By Keiti | July 25, 2008

Today was spent running errands with my father; I wanted to hit the Apple store down in Palm Beach Gardens to pick up World Traveler plugs for my laptop and he wanted to go by Williams Sonoma.  We made a morning of it - hit the stores then grabbed lunch before heading back home.  After that I ended up sleeping the afternoon away.  I tend to do that when I’m stressed out, and to say that I’m a bit overwhelmed would be an understatement.

I also booked my train ticket from West Palm Beach to NYC - my friend, L. o’Balls is still taking the train with me, so that’s cool.  I’m happy to have a friend to share at least that part of the journey with me.

I think I’ve also decided to forego the three days in London and just scoot on up to Stirling.  As much as I’d like to spend the time in London, it’s pretty damn expensive and since I don’t have anyone taking the international part of the trip with me, I don’t have anyone to split the costs with.  So I need to email the school to see about getting accommodations a couple of days early.  It makes sense to get up there early, anyway - it’ll give me time to check out Stirling and take care of things like opening up a bank account and doing a bit of shopping for things I’ll need to pick up.

So, that’s where things stand, now.  I need to start making phone calls to Cunard to see about them picking up and delivering some of my baggage.  Which means I need to find out the address for them to deliver them to.  I’m really not taking more than two suitcases, my laptop, and a carry on bag, but the less I physically have to contend with, the better.

Yard sale coming up this Saturday.  My mom and I are going to spend part of the day continuing to sort through things and get everything together to be put out on Saturday morning.  I’m hoping it will be a bit lucrative - I’m trying to pay for what I can out of pocket instead of hitting the money set aside in what I affectionaly refer to as “the Scotland account”.

Wish me luck.
